Relocating homebuyers are escaping to the country
A LEADING housebuilder has confirmed North Devon’s appeal among relocating home buyers thanks to its rich open countryside and rural way of life.
Elan Homes, building 150 new homes at The Gateway, a beautiful 20-acre development of two, three and four-bedroom homes on the outskirts of South Molton, is experiencing a growing number of enquiries from budding home buyers seeking a rural sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
Relocating homebuyers are drawn to the popular market town that’s set on the edge of Exmoor National Park, just off the North Devon Link Road with good access to the M5, Barnstable and national rail connections in Tiverton.

The Hawkins family – Richard, his wife Cinta and their young son – have just moved to South Molton from Maidenhead.
Richard, 53, who is a franchise owner for Hillarys Blinds, said: “We moved to South Molton in June from Maidenhead and we love it.
“Holidays in Devon and Cornwall were a regular occurrence in my childhood and when my father passed away 18 months ago, we took the decision to start our search for a new home in Devon.
“It’s the little things that make the area so special. Previously, we were living on the outskirts of London and I spent a lot of time travelling around the city for work. Living in North Devon, I still travel daily to visit customers, but now I’m visiting farms and am surrounded by fields rather than sitting in endless traffic.
“My wife loves it here too. It’s a different way of life for us. We can walk into South Molton and shop locally in the fruit and veg shop rather than drive to large out of town supermarkets.”
Richard and Cinta bought one of the largest family homes at The Gateway, the four-bedroom detached Hebden. The ground floor features a spacious lounge, a contemporary kitchen/dining/family room with French doors leading to the garden and a separate utility room and cloakroom. Upstairs, there are two double bedrooms, one with en-suite, plus two further bedrooms, one of which would make an ideal study and a family bathroom.
Richard adds: “During our property search, we looked at various housebuilders in the area but chose Elan for the location and the value for money. We’re almost there getting the house just the way we want it, and I’m looking forward to starting work outside in the back garden next spring.
“Living here feels like we’re on holiday, with the endless fields and open countryside, but I have to remind myself I’m not, this is home now.”
