Renting out their old home lets couple make their dream move
Emma and Mark Sheil are letting their old house work for them – they’ve rented it out so that they could make their dream move to a brand new home in Thornton.
The couple feared they would be held back from moving from their two-bedroom semi-detached property in Netherton to somewhere larger if they couldn’t secure a buyer. They initially wanted a three-bedroom home until they visited Thornton Cross, a select development from Elan Homes in Thornton.
“When we passed Thornton Cross we thought it looked gorgeous so went in to find out more. The sales consultant put us in contact with an independent financial advisor who explained that if we rented out our old house we would be able buy one of the homes,” Emma explains.
“We didn’t imagine that we would be able to buy a property as nice as this and keep our old house, but when we looked at the figures we realised we could rent out our current property, convert to a buy to let mortgage and buy our dream home.”
Emma, 28, who is a dental nurse and Mark, 29, an offshore crane driver, looked at other homes in the surrounding area, but said nothing compared to the properties at Thornton Cross.
“We fell in love with the four-bedroom Bunbury as it really is beautiful. There’s a lot more space than we were used to with a lovely open plan kitchen and family room. It made us decided it had to be a brand new home. Everything is finished off really nicely, which meant we could just move in,” Emma adds.
“It’s great knowing that no one else has lived here and everything is clean, fresh and new. The customer service was brilliant and everyone involved has been very helpful and made moving easy. I have been recommending Elan to anyone who will listen!”
Thornton Cross is an intimate development of just 13 properties, more than half of which have now been sold. Four-bedroom homes are available in a choice of three styles, with prices from £249,995 on the open market or an initial outlay of £199,996 with Help to Buy.
Andrew Robertson, senior sales manager for Elan Homes in the North, says: “We want people to understand that we’re here to help make moving easy and will put them in touch with experts who will guide them through the various options. It may be that like the Sheils, renting out their old home and converting to a buy to let mortgage lets them buy somewhere new. Alternatively they could utilise part exchange and trade in their property towards the cost of one of ours. Or they may even opt to take out an equity loan through the Help to Buy scheme so that they buy with only a 5% deposit and 75% mortgage. But with limited availability buyers must hurry if they want to move to Thornton Cross.”
