DEMAND FUELS APPEAL FOR LAND FOR HOUSING IN SOMERSET

THE developer behind new homes in Glastonbury is keen to acquire additional land across Somerset to satisfy demand.

Elan Homes recently welcomed the first residents to its Avalon development on Old Wells Road, where homes are selling well ahead of the build programme.

The 60-home scheme is helping address the housing shortage, catering for consumer demand while contributing towards government targets and aiding Mendip Council in delivering affordable homes.

Independent homebuilder Elan is keen to acquire additional land across the county to help further boost housing supply.

Elan’s regional head of land Ben Jowett said: “Homebuilding has an important role to play in the economy – providing housing and employment, boosting investment in communities and generating income for local authorities in the form of council tax receipts. The Government is targeting 300,000 new homes a year nationwide and at Elan we’re proud to be helping contribute towards that figure by providing the homes buyers want and need.

“We’ve developed a reputation for building quality homes in desirable areas, having previously built new homes in Somerton and Castle Cary, with high demand for our current Somerset development Avalon in Glastonbury. We are looking to continue our presence in the Somerset area, within easy reach of the M5 corridor, and would be keen to hear of new potential residential opportunities from landowners.”

Elan will consider sites of various sizes – the majority of its sites are of 30-50 homes, but its most intimate development features just six executive family homes.

“The land market is currently extremely competitive and what sets us apart as an independent housebuilder is that we can take a more flexible approach to site acquisition to that taken by other housebuilders,” Ben explained.

“We’ll consider land with, or without, planning permission, including sites occupied with derelict or underused buildings which offer potential for residential development. We have a proven track record of working with land owners, local authorities, industrial operators, land promoters and other stakeholders to progress schemes, appraising the local market and assessing who would want to live there, and why, before planning a bespoke development to address housing need in that particular area.”
