A COMMUNITY food programme in Blackburn has restocked its shelves thanks to funding from Elan Homes.
The homebuilder donated £500 to The Billy Project’s community fridge. The organisation aims to help people build confidence, make healthier choices, build friendships and tackle loneliness.
Leanne Procter, from The Billy Project, explained: “Our fridge currently supports roughly 125 bags of food per week. We are open to all but mainly support those on low incomes, the elderly and unemployed. We receive a lot of referrals from services including the homeless and families in crisis, plus asylum seekers. We also help those who aren’t in contact with services who often slip through the net. We’re a vital service to many.
“The donation from Elan is very much appreciate by our community. We used the funding from Elan to buy in nonperishable food items and hygiene products to support people in our community.”
Located at Fitness for Women on Albert Street, the community fridge is around two miles from Elan’s Tower Gardens development.
Elan regional sales and marketing director Marie Morris said: “The Billy Project’s community fridge provides a much-valued service for the people of Blackburn and Darwen. Helping restock their shelves is our way of giving back to the community and ensuring that people can access essential items many of us take for granted.”
Open Monday to Friday from 11am to 4pm, the community fridge provides fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy products and pantry essentials at affordable prices – £4 a bag or £15 for two bags a week for 28 days.
