Latest research from the HBF and Octopus Energy suggests people living in new build homes spend 21% less on energy bills than those in older properties. Based on EPC data and the Ofgem price cap, it’s estimated that someone living in a new build home rated A or B would save an average of around £420 a year on their energy bills compared to someone in a D rated home. The saving increases to £618 when compared with a home rated F or G.

The HBF and Octopus found that upgrading an older home to match the energy efficiency of a new build home would cost between £23,100 and £83,000. Features vary between locations, but can include solar panels, air source heat pumps or energy efficient boilers, triple glazing and waste water heat recovery systems.
